It is generally considered that Art Moderne started in 1907 with “Girls from Avignon” by Pablo Picasso and lasted until 1960s, when Pop Art and Fluxus appeared as new movements. A lot of famous writers and artists wrote about colors in Art Moderne, like Goethe and Matisse – just to name a few.
Art Moderne influenced a number of eminent painters of the 20th century, such as Degas, Picasso, Matisse, Miro. Art Moderne is defined by the style and the choice of subject. “Modern” is a way of thinking, as well as of a lifestyle. For a modern artist it’s a possibility to transform everyday life into beauty. Walt Whitman, for example, too has observed everyday impressions in their perpetual movement.
Beauty is not an antiquity. Apparently, an impressionist point of view has more freedom within the conventions of the époque. An artist accepts a variety of modern life without looking back with nostalgia. We observe a bigger freedom in colors. From the institutional point of view the emergence of Art Moderne broke the Academic conservative rules in the sense that public tastes and opinion became credible. It’s up to you to decide whether you like it or not.
Academy lost influence on Beaux-Arts and stopped being legitimate in the eyes of artists. Thus, a bohemia emerged refusing to show their works next to academicians.
